Ill - Audible Visions

Ill is a nice little studio in Paris that is interested in poster art and design for print. They set up lots of stuff for exhibitions.

This is a cool little project, its really intricate and nicely printed, the imagery and type is nice and sits simply together.

Typography, art direction and design for the Audible Visions mix CD.

LSF

Just a really stupid thing that I did for Sam's Fixed Gear Leeds blog.

This Will Kill That

A Camberwell Collage of Art and Design BA Illustration Graduate show.
This was in Shorditch Street in London just by Brick Lane. It is one exhibition I have used for my Dissertation research.

These silk-screened fliers are cool as shit.

Teepay

I thought the design of the card is a cool simple one. Also the t-shirt is quite clever. But the website is realy good. Its easy to use and you just upload t-shirt designs. www.teepay.com

Steve Harrington

Spin art painting.
4ft x 4ft screen-print and watercolour painting.
Really cool new works, i like the contrast between both medias.

Thailand Bad Design

Tourist police station poster.

Everywhere else in the Barbour said 'Guy Cut' haha.

Clothes shopping bag.

Brilliant flier for a club, drawn by a drug addict five minutes before it went to print.

This was on ALL the menus.

Thailand Good Design

I just think that the desing for the Chang Beer and water are a really nice simple piece of design work. The water is a recent product from them.

Chang Beer

I thought this was a bit of simple design that took my eye. Nothing special about it or anything, but it looks nice to me.

I dont know weather it is the design of the beer labels or just the beer itself but I think it is just nice simple design and colour work.

Jonny Hannah

Jonny Hannah, silkscreens. Found them on the ilovedust blog. Never heard of him before but was impressed by these. The web site has some good stuff on it, but the actually site itself is horrible and annoying to navigate.

Mat Pringle

I love these set of nautical art prints by Mat Pringle. 'My Home Is The Sea' comes with three 10″ x 10″ silk-screens, he only has a tiny edition of 30 made.

Parra

Some new works by Parra. Some poster stuff fro bands and exhibitions, and some other stuff for Vans shoes. The one with the actual shoes on it is very 'un Parra' because of the outlines, but over all some cool stuff.

Need to start doing my own type, think I need to get me a scanner.

Ali Emre

Some image/type over photography. I love the way that the semi opaque colour of the shapes sits over the black and white photography.

PPD Evaluation

My portfolio up-to-date is as good as could be expected. I am not 100% pleased with it but don't think there will be a day I am. I would like to make my work more mature and less juvenile and create pieces with a lot more meaning and depth.
As a designer I want to expand on what my practice already entails. Instead of working purely wit image and not concentrating on type, I would like to combined the two and make type and image equal in the end results. I also want to start getting a little more complex with my silk-screen process, with larger, more intricate prints and more and more colours.

There are many designers that I like to follow such as The Lonely Punks. Originally from Leeds. Mike Perry, Steve Harrington, Alter design, Aesthetic Apparatus etc. These are all predominantly silk-screen based, poster based, print based designers/companies. This is pretty much what I'm all about, I hope that my work is recognised as print and I can maximise on the skills i already have. I will continue to follow websites, blogs and books as inspiration for my work.

Some if my work is juvenile and boring. Some of it has no meaning. I have grown with time management and organisation skills. If I can incorporate this with my final design aesthetic, it will give me the strength I need to create some really nice pieces of design work that are engaging.

I am going to look a lot more into type over the summer. Mainly hand-drawn type mixed with image. This is a big change for me and I cant wait for my skills in this area to develop over the summer. I think I will also invest in a scanner so that my illustrated type will become digital.
I will investigate again into silk-screening and print making in general. T-shirts, posters etc. I will carry on my own practice without a brief over the summer to keep the creative juices flowing.

My dissertation is going to be all about why contemporary designers persist in using manual, old silk-screening methods even though we live in an age of digital print. This will entail history behind print and interviews with contemporary design practices. I am extremely interested in silk-screening and it plays a large role in my practice, so this will benefit me greatly.

End of Module Evauation

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I have developed my time keeping skills. With managing our own briefs I have found that time management is fairly easy as long as you structure it well and stick too it. I have stuck to my plan from the first day, only over lapping for one day. This left me feeling (fairly) calm towards the end as all the work was done it just needed to be organised properly.

I have also once again developed my skills in silk-screening. Using Vernon street as my print studio I have gained help from the tutors and really grasped how easy a practice it can be, once again, as long as time is kept well.

2. What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I have gone through books in the library and also bought books myself. This narrows down the breadth of research because everything that you need/want to see about that designer or topic is in one place and is just a scan away from broadening your research.

I have made my library of bookmarks larger and regularly check sites and designers that I love for updates, posts etc.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

Orgnisation of my projects has felt like a big strength to me this time. I have organised my work in a way that I would like to receive work from an assessment. I have also done my work in an organised fashion. I did all my research right at the start so that when it was time to start the work, I had things to refer from straight away. It made the projects feel more mannagable and eaier to cope with.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?

The research feels a little small and narrow to me. I think that what I have researched has helped and influenced my work, but it hasn’t been as strong as it could be. My design sheets for some projects are rushed because I had already felt I new what I was doing. Something I later found myself regretting.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

• In-depth research
• Exhaust as much possibilities as I can within the set investigation with the time given
• Generate more ideas
• Develop solutions further
• Think about the context of my work

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

Attendance - 5
Punctuality - 4
Motivation - 3
Commitment - 3
Quantity of work produced - 3
Quality of work produced - 3
Contribution to the group - 3
